Edible garden

Hello everyone,

You’ll be pleased to know an edible garden is going to be created at the EELM very soon! Some bird feeders have also been placed near the raised beds and some bird houses and a shelter for hedgehogs will be added soon.
The education around this garden is obviously managed by the teaching staff. However, the set up, the materials and the maintenance will require some help from motivated parents or families!
To make sure this garden is a success, you can help by:

If you can help, do not hesitate to contact us on at this address : ecoschool@ape-eelm.eu
We are looking forward to starting this exciting project, a huge thank you in advance for any help you can offer!

Take care,

Newsletter #1

As every year, September is the time for the review of the previous year, the constitution of the new team with its share of important formal moments: organization of the General Assembly, presentation of the financial and activity report of the previous year and the election of the parents’ representatives within the Association.

The work carried out by the Association is done through working groups, open to all parents and organized around defined themes.

At the beginning of this year, a little more than 60 parents are actively involved in CAPE and in the working groups. Here is a summary of their main actions:

Extracurricular

The extracurricular activities are still largely managed by the municipality (especially the morning and evening day care for the nursery and primary schools) but in two years’ time the APE will have to take over all the extracurricular activities for the school.

So, this year, we have started… and it’s going well: 78 students registered, 4 workshops on different themes for the primary and nursery schools. Despite the lockdown we managed, thanks to the flexibility of the parents, to maintain the activities by reorganizing the groups.

After this start, and for the second part of the year, we are planning, with the agreement of the school, to open one or two workshops for the “S” students and we are also preparing a wider range of activities for the next school year. Watch your emails, we will tell you more in January.

Library

The Nursery and Primary Library (“BCD”) is managed entirely by the APE and a great team of parents, who last year had already sorted and covered the books and set up a referencing system, and which continues this year to allow easy and structured access to all primary and nursery classes. This year the objective is to allow students to borrow books. We are working on it.

The Library group is also supporting the teaching team in the setting up of a CDI for Secondary students, and at the beginning of the year organized a campaign of book donations to expand the collection and offered financial support for the purchase of books in English.

Culture & Diversity

Culture and diversity are cross-cutting topics that are found in all our projects, but the idea of a multilingual virtual library was born last year and has enabled us to collect videos of children’s stories read by parents of various nationalities. This library already has some videos, and we would like to continue to expand it and find a way to share the works with our children.

Another successful project this year has been the “Family Lessons” :these are conversation groups in English or French on various topics, aimed at parents who want to improve their skills in one of these langages at the same time as getting to know other parents.

Eco-School

In the Eco-school group, many parents are involved in projects that all want to put the values of sustainable development at the heart of our school.

Concretely, they have enabled the participation of primary and nursery classes in the World Clean up Day, the organization of a reverse Advent calendar action, an action to raise awareness of sharing for our little ones and which allowed us to collect toys for an association, Ludopital.

The team is also working jointly with the school and the town hall on the implementation of a small vegetable garden for next spring

Already set up last year, the eco-boxes for sorting waste at the school are again this year in the spotlight and used to raise awareness among children and parents about waste sorting.

Other themes are also on the agenda, such as raising awareness of biodiversity and intergenerational aid.

Mobility

A gentle start for a group that wants to emphasize soft mobility, but not only.

They are working to improve the smooth flow of transportation to and from the current school and are looking at the mobility and transportation issues once the school has moved to the new building and will accommodate a larger number of children.

Fundraising

Following last year’s success, we wanted to relaunch our “Easy Wednesday” actions in November, but we will have to wait until January… but we promise you super Easy Wednesdays… The first Easy Wednesday will take you to Italy…

We can’t travel, we can’t meet each other, never mind! The whole team has been busy to allow you to travel with a great book, with almost 80 recipes, from the four corners of the world. A delight!

An incredible collaborative work, in record time, a bilingual FR/EN book, of which we sold nearly 250 copies: one word of praise to all of you and thank you!

To contact this group or get involved you can write to:

fundraising@ape-eelm.eu

Communication

No blah blah blah but a lot of ideas to better share, exchange and inform… especially at the beginning of this year:

The redesign and implementation of a new website which aims to keep parents informed of current projects and centralize essential information.

We are also working on a better use of the forum and a communication memo to guide parents who have questions about the school, the association and daily problems.

This group also created a newsletter (quarterly) of which we are very proud to present this first issue.

To contact this group or get involved you can write to:

wg-communication@ape.eelm.eu

Only one word of conclusion is necessary for all the parents who made this possible, for all the other parents who support and encourage us, as well as for the team of teachers and management who are overflowing with energy and effort in a difficult health context:

Ludopital : Collecting toys

The approaching festive season is associated with sharing, generosity and solidarity. We want these strong civic values, so dear to the European Schools, to take on a real dimension in the eyes of our children.

We invite you all to join us in a campaign to collect second-hand toys for a local children’s charity called : Ludopital.

Toys can be donated from December 7th to December 11th. Children put their toy or game in the boxes provided in their classrooms. The aims of Ludopital and the reasons for this project will be explained to the children in class.

This initiative includes all classes (M – P – S). To help you, here is a list of toys your children can donate :

  • Baby toys and games (sensory toys for example)
  • Soft toys (CE standard)
  • Small vehicles (cars, trucks…)
  • Role-playing toys (dolls, characters, animals, costumes…)
  • Books, comics, manga
  • Jigsaw puzzles (<250 pieces)
  • Board games
  • Games and books for teenagers

All toys donated must be in very good condition, clean, and with no missing pieces.
Many thanks for your generosity.

Extracurricular activities

Good news: extracurricular activities are maintained!

Some adjustments are however necessary to ensure that “non-mixing” is still maintained.

Your children will therefore now have their workshop every other week — with the exception of the Thursday circus workshop which will take place every week — for as long as the current health & safety measures are in place.

Thank you to the few parents who agreed to have their child change workshops to make this possible.

School Ecomobility Challenge, October 2020

Dear Parents and Pupils,

We would like to invite you to take part, with the School, in the ‘School Ecomobility Challenge’, which takes places next week from Monday 5 to Friday 9 October. Every morning during the week, your child’s teacher will make a note of the type of transportation they used to come to school.

What’s the goal?

– To increase awareness about nicer ways (walking, cycling, using scooters, public transport, etc.) to travel to and from school;

– To increase awareness about the beneficial effects of these alternatives for our health and for the environment;

– To reduce, throughout this ‘ecomobility’ week, the amount of car traffic around the School;

– To make getting to school safer for pupils and parents.

How?

By traveling to School by a means other than the personal car.  Doing so just on one day in the week would make a real contribution to meeting this Challenge!

The EELM has set up a Cmabulle account. You can download the app today and use it to find and get organized with other parents near where you live to share the trip to school

Where and when?

–  Saint Vincent Church in Marcq-en-Barœul by bike on Monday 5 and Thursday 8 October

–  Saint Maurice Pellevoisin by bike on Tuesday 6, Wednesday 7 and Friday 9 October

–  Wasquehal by tram and walking bus on Tuesday 6 and Thursday 8 October

–  Quesnoy-sur-Deûle by bike on Monday 5 and Wednesday 7 October

You can see the detail of the proposed routes in the attached document.

And you can create your own route if you wish with other families (and don’t forget Cmabulle might help you to do so).

With whom?

Parents will be there. Why not join them!

You can help us meet this Challenge!

Parents remain responsible for their children. And last but not least, don’t forget to wear a yellow vest and a helmet!

This would be a great opportunity for parents who wish to volunteer a bit of their time and get involved in the School life and the Parents’ Association team.

We welcome and need your help and support!

The meeting will take place on September 14th from 19.30 until 20.30. The venue will be confirmed later on. Those who are unable to attend in person will have the possibility to participate via Teams. Please send your email address beforehand to: bureau@ape-eelm.eu

Logo

We would like to share with you the new logo for the EELM Parent Association.

We have created a logo that is universal in meaning and emphasises who we represent. In addition, the logo is recognisably aligned to the school’s logo in its presentation.

On behalf of the entire EELM Parent Association, we would like to thank Michael Barton for giving his valuable time during confinement to create this final image. Michael’s willingness to help and generosity of time is a further reminder of how supportive our school community is.
